Renovation of Nallathaniya Emergency Health Centre
The Nallathaniya Emergency Health Center plays a critical role in providing healthcare services in an area with significant demand during the Sripada pilgrimage season. Every year, the pilgrimage attracts an average of 750,000 visitors per week for six months. Despite its significance as a pilgrimage hub, the local healthcare centre has long been in a state of disrepair, struggling to meet the medical needs of the community and visiting pilgrims.
Recognizing the need for renovation, UNFPA Sri Lanka, in collaboration with SLRCS, and Nuwara Eliya district health authorities, initiated a project aimed at revitalizing the facility with the funding of the Japan Supplementary budget. The project, launched in October 2024, focused on overhauling the facility’s infrastructure, providing essential furniture, and equipping it with necessary medical tools to improve healthcare delivery.
By the end of 2024, the renovated healthcare centre was inaugurated with a community celebration, symbolizing the collaborative success of all stakeholders involved. This renovation marked a significant milestone in addressing the healthcare disparities in the region, particularly during the high-demand pilgrimage season. Local health authorities and the public expressed their heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing the improved access to quality healthcare services brought about by the project.
“There used to be only a few clinics and nothing more. But now, we have an OPD with proper facilities. We are truly grateful for receiving all these improvements.” – Mr. Nimal, a villager. The initiative not only enhanced the capacity of the health centre to serve the community but also underscored the importance of partnerships and targeted funding in addressing critical healthcare challenges in underserved areas.
