Transforming Health Services for Kayts – Overcoming Challenges with Renovation and Expansion

Posted on Friday, February 14th, 2025

The Kayts Medical Officer of Health (MOH), located on the island of Kayts off the northern coast of Sri Lanka, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, the upgraded infrastructure, enhanced sanitation, and improved medical spaces provide a welcoming and efficient healthcare environment. Expectant mothers and new mothers with their children who once hesitated to seek care due to poor conditions now walk through its doors with confidence. “Thank you very much for the renovation. Pregnant mothers will now feel safe and comfortable. This renovation is truly appreciated,” shares Dr. J. Nandini, the Medical Officer at Kayts MOH.

However, the journey to this transformation was not without challenges. Previously, the facility, which served hundreds of people, was in disrepair. Deteriorating infrastructure made it difficult to provide consistent and safe healthcare. Kayts’ remote location posed logistical challenges, with healthcare providers traveling long distances to attend emergencies and run regular clinics. The inadequate living conditions at the MOH Quarters made it difficult for staff to respond quickly to emergencies. Furthermore, the lack of essential amenities in the clinic area made healthcare uncomfortable for pregnant women, new mothers, and children.

Addressing these pressing issues, UNFPA Sri Lanka, in partnership with the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society and the Jaffna district health authorities, stepped forward with funding support from the Government of Japan to launch the renovation and expansion project. This initiative has significantly improved access to healthcare and enhanced the quality of services provided.

For Dr. J. Nandini, the transformation was a lifeline. “Previously, we struggled to conduct clinics due to the leaky roofs during the rainy season and the extreme heat in the summer. Pregnant women found it challenging to attend the clinics, and we often had to hold sessions in the MOH office itself,” she recalls.

The transformation of the Kayts Medical Officer of Health facility marks a major milestone in improving community healthcare. Looking ahead, continued partnerships, investments in healthcare infrastructure and services will further strengthen the well-being of the Sri Lankans, ensuring a healthier and brighter future for generations to come.
