Let’s Improve Climate Literacy in Sri Lanka!

Background: Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, affecting every aspect of our environment, society, and economy. As a tropical nation, Sri Lanka is particularly vulnerable to its impacts. Despite this, there is a significant gap in climate change literacy among the youth in Sri Lanka. Traditional education systems and media have not sufficiently bridged this knowledge gap, especially for Sinhala and Tamil-speaking communities.

Innovative Solution: To address this challenge, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society is launching a groundbreaking initiative to promote climate literacy through the creation of three dedicated websites in Sinhala, Tamil, and English. These platforms aim to educate and engage young people, fostering a generation that is well-informed and proactive in combating climate change.

Specific Objectives:

  1. Promote Climate Literacy: Equip Sinhala, Tamil, and English-speaking youth with the knowledge to understand and address climate change.
  2. Create Knowledge Forums: Establish platforms for scholars, researchers, and the public to share and discuss climate-related knowledge and ideologies.
  3. Youth Training: Offer training in climate journalism and reporting to empower youth voices.
  4. Public Information: Disseminate information on national climate initiatives and the efforts of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society.
  5. Data Systems: Develop a comprehensive climate-related data system accessible to all.
  6. Engage School Children: Encourage school children to participate in climate action and enhance their competitive knowledge.
