Power of Youth in focus this World Red Cross Day
08/05/2012, Colombo, Sri Lanka: To mark this year’s World Red Cross Red Crescent Day on 8th May, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society is celebrating the contributions of young people and encouraging their continued action and leadership under the global theme, “Youth on the move”.
In solidarity with the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society will host several humanitarian activities on 8th May throughout the country. The national event will be held in Rambewa, Anuradhapura from 10 am onwards.
“Young people have a critical role in helping the Red Cross Red Crescent reach the most vulnerable explained Jagath Abeysinghe, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society.
Half of the 13 million Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers worldwide are young people. The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society contributes 20,000 of this total figure, and the Red Cross Red Crescent recognizes the important value they bring to our communities, by leading positive change on a daily basis.
“Without our young people, we could not achieve what we do as a Movement,” stated Tissa Abeywickrema Director General of the SLRCS. “At Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, we will empower young people to continue to fulfill leadership roles so they can do more, do better and reach further in service to the most vulnerable.”
