Pledging support for a longer term recovery programme in Nepal
14/06/2015 – Kathmandu, Nepal – The President of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Jagath Abeysinghe and the Director General Tissa Abeywickrama in discussions with Nepal Red Cross President & Secretary General pledged their longer term support to help the country recovery from the recent earthquake that killed over 8500 and devastated the whole country.
Both the President and Director General were attending a Partnership Meeting organized by Nepal Red Cross Society recently.
The meeting was aimed at ensuring that Red Cross Red Crescent partners across the world would join hands with Nepal Red Cross in the longer term recovery and reconstruction programme.
Sri Lanka Red Cross will provide financial, resources and voluntary support to Nepal Red Cross in the next few years.
“Its vital that we support our friends in the region” says the Director General of Sri Lanka Red Cross Tissa Abeywickrama.
“Sri Lanka Red Cross has a very strong knowledge and experience in rebuilding after disasters. Our Tsunami Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Programme that has build over 35,000 houses and very recently our Post Conflict Recovery Programme aiming to finish over 17,000 houses, gives us a good position to guide and aid Nepal Red Cross in this rebuilding process.”
The Partnership Meeting in Kathmandu was attended by various National Societies across the world the Deputy Prime Minister & Foreign Affairs Minister of Nepal Mahendra Bahadur Pandey attended as the chief guest.
