Critical Canal Cleaning Initiative in Kolonnawa to Combat Flooding and Dengue

Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) Colombo Branch, in collaboration with the Disaster Management Centre Colombo and the Divisional Secretary of Kolonnawa, has launched a vital project to clean 12 channels in Kolonnawa. Funded by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), this initiative aims to reduce flooding and curb the spread of dengue.

Kolonnawa’s channels have been prone to blockages, leading to frequent flooding and creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which increase the risk of dengue. To address these issues, SLRCS volunteers and local residents are working together to clear the channels, ensuring that they remain free-flowing and functional.

This project highlights the power of community collaboration in tackling local challenges. With continued efforts, the Kolonnawa area will become safer, reducing both flood risks and health hazards. The SLRCS remains committed to improving the well-being of communities across Sri Lanka.
