#100kPPE: Let’s Protect Our Protectors
By Sakshi Selvanathan – 31/05/2021
It has been more than a year since the emergence of the debilitating COVID-19 pandemic, and it continues its ruthless rampage against the lives and security of countless individuals across the international and national strata. And this was no different in Sri Lanka.
COVID-19 prevails even after the numerous interventions implemented by organizations like ours, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society. Some of them included but were not limited to: regular island-wide awareness campaigns to inform the public about COVID-19 prevention methods; disinfection activities carried out by volunteers in public places and government offices to reduce COVID-19 transmission, and regular volunteer deployment to hospitals to support medical staff.
But now, as the third bout of COVID-19 ravages Sri Lanka without cessation, resources needed to save lives are dwindling to dangerously low levels. Skyrocketing numbers of infections across the country each day make heavier demands on already-taxed governmental health authorities and medical professionals.
The need to support them is more crucial than ever before. And we at the Sri Lanka Red Cross implore you to take action. We need your help to support and protect our noble front-liners in their efforts to stave off the deadly epidemic. Help us procure the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them – as they strive to protect us each day.
