Mitigation equipment worth a million rupees handed over to the public
20/05/2015 – Kalutara, Sri Lanka: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s (SLRCS) Kalutara Branch handed over equipment worth a million rupees to the Walallawitia Divisional Secretariat as mitigation support for future disasters.
The programme conducted under the Integrated Programme for Community Resilience of SLRCS Walallawita Divisional Secretariat was identified as a disaster prone area specially during the flood season. Last year over 100,000 people from this area were affected due to flash floods.
The equipment contains two ferries and other kitchen utensils, to be used during the times of disasters by the Divisional Secretariat to provide relief assistance to the people.
The handing over ceremony took place in Wallawita with the participation of Kalutara District Secretary Mr. U. D. C. Jayalal, Venerable Thero of Udugama temple, Walallawita Divisional Secretary Mrs. Darshana Ranasingha, Deputy Director General of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Mr. Sudath Madugalle, Chairman of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Kalutara Branch Mr. M. K. Chandrasiri, Assistant Programme Manager of Disaster Management Mr. Damitha Chanaka, Assistant Director of District Disaster Management Centre of Kalutara Major Samaranayaka, MOH, Principals of Udugama KV, Gammana Vidyalaya, Halwala Kannangara Vidyalaya ,Grama Niladari, Samurdhi and Branch Executive Officer of SLRCS Kalutara Branch Wijith Rasanga.
The SLRCS Kalutara Branch has been actively working with the Government Officers in the area in order to identify areas of development in mitigation. Every year during monsoonal rains the area gets flooded and affectiving area residents.
