Support towards Nepal earthquake continues to grow as aid transitions towards longterm recovery needs
02/05/2015 – Colombo, Sri Lanka: Aid and support towards Nepal and Nepal Red Cross Society continues to grow in the aftermath of the 7.9 earthquake that rattled the Himalayan nation, brining the entire country to a stand still. As of now the death toll from the tragedy has passed over 6600, while another 6000 people are still unaccounted for.
International aid and support has been pouring into Nepal since the incident. The International Federation of Red Cross & Red Crescent (IFRC) immediately released 500,000 Swiss Francs (Approx – 71,000,000/- LKR) from its emergency relief fund in order to carry out much needed aid support on the ground.
Sri Lanka Red Cross as well began to support Nepal Red Cross financially by launching a local campaign. People were invited to donate to a bank account opened for International Assistance that will be donated to Nepal Red Cross to carry out longer term recovery & reconstruction needs.
“These contributions will support our partner in Nepal not only to provide immediate relief but towards a much needed support when bring back the people towards their normal lives” says President of Sri Lanka Red Cross Jagath Abeysinghe.
