Celebrating the World First Aid Day 2018
8th September/Colombo – 2nd Saturday of September, is World First Aid Day, an annual global campaign to promote the importance of first aid training in preventing injuries and saving lives.
“First Response to Road Crashes” has been selected as the theme of this year’s World First Aid Day recognizing the importance of First Aid in responding to road crashes/road accidents. Going in-line with the global theme, Sri Lanka Red Cross Society has also dedicated this year’s WFAD to educate School Bus Drivers, Three-wheel drivers, Traffic Police Officers and Driving School Owners to be trained in First Aid to minimize the loss of lives and long-term disabilities due to road accidents.
First Aid is becoming more and more essential to day today lives of human beings. Reportedly, thousands of people in Sri Lanka die and thousands become permanently disabled due to road accidents each year. According to the statistics over 3000 deaths have been reported due to road accidents in the year 2017.
These alarming statistics underline the importance of basic road safety awareness and also of life-saving techniques. To promote the importance of first aid training in preventing injuries and saving lives, The Sri Lanka Red Cross society has initiated many road safety programmes to educate on road safety and providing First Aid.
Meanwhile several activities across Sri Lanka were organized by our branches in order raise awareness on World First Aid day. The main event was held at the Mahaweli Centre in Colombo yesterday with the participation of National Council for Road Safety and RMV.
