As one cyclonic system moves away, another brewing in the South Bay of Bengal: Red Cross on alert
01/12/2017, Colombo, Sri Lanka: The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s Disaster Management centre has been tracking another possible storm that could impact the Eastern & Northern Sri Lanka in the coming week.
Weather modules predict that the system could impact Southern India and would brush aside the eastern and northern Sri Lanka bring in heavy rains and winds. However these modules chould change the trajectory monitoring as to how the system develops. As per current data on the (4th of December 2017) – the system is expected to by pass Sri Lanka and make landfall in Andra Pradesh by the 7th of December 2017.
As of now all Branch Disaster Response teams in the Eastern & Nothern Provinces has been put on alert and steps will be taken to assist people who would be impacted by the system.
Meanwhile, from the recent past tropical storm Ockhi, is currently moving away from the island towards the Arabian Sea.
Sri Lanka Red Cross volunteers began assisting people affected on the 29th of November, in the late hours of the day when strong winds ripped through various cities in the western seaboard.
In Colombo, the volunteers from the Sri Lanka Red Cross Colombo Branch assisted in safeguarding books that are to be distributed to students across the island at the National Library of the National Archive in Torrington, Colombo.
A tree fell on top of the library destroying a wall which made rainwater to seep into the stock room and damaged the books. Steps were immediately taken by our volunteers to cover the area with tarpaulins and ensure that the books are safe.
