Safeguarding communities in the aftermath of a disaster
22/12/2016 – Colombo, Sri Lanka: The second phase of distribution of items to the flood affected in the Colombo district took place today in Megoda Kolonnawa and Belagama in the Kolonnawa division. This is part of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society’s (SLRCS) partnership with the UNHabitat to distributed non food relief items such as bedsheets and mosquito nets for people that were in the vulnerable state after facing the adverse floods in mid this year.
1550 families living in both these villages were provided with the said items.
President of SLRCS Jagath Abeysinghe took part in the distribution process along with UNHabitat Coordinator Zuhair J Kariapper and other officials from both organizations.

Beneficiaries in Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, Wattala & Biyagama were some of the worst affected and also are in the most vulnerable state due to the poor living conditions they have been in even prior to the disaster.

As part of the SLRCS flood relief and support programme these items were distributed in Kolonnawa and Wattala yesterday. 6830 beneficiaries from the Colombo district and 6670 from the Gampaha district received support from this programme.

DS divisions and the number of beneficiaries were decided by UN habitat in consultation with relevant Government Authorities (DS). Later on SLRCS & UNHabitat officers re-visited the DS to reconfirm the activity and get the update on latest situation. At the 2nd visits, small changes were made in some areas as per the requirements and the situation in the DS division as per the request of the DS.
Heavy rained occurred in May 2016 affecting 19 districts. 05 districts mainly Colombo, Gampaha, Kegalle, Kandy & Ratnapura were fully affected from flash floods & landslides. According to Government statistics over 428,948 persons affected & 299,806 persons displaced.
